Homemade Yogurt: Science Lesson & Money Saver!!

Several ladies at my homeschooling group were talking about how they make their own yogurt at home. After getting brief instructions I thought this might be something that I could try. I figured what could be better than a snack, science lesson and money saving opportunity all rolled up in one!! My girls were so excited at the mere thought that they could make yogurt.  I did a little research on Google and found a very helpful post on crock-pot yogurt.
1. I put 8 cups of milk into the crock-pot and cooked on LOW for 3 hours
2. Meant to turn off crock-pot and let milk set for 3 hours. Instead I turned it to Keep Warm and left it for closer to 5 hrs
3.  Unplugged crock-pot.
4.Removed a cup or two of the milk and placed in a bowl. Then whisked in a cup or so of Activa (you should be able to use any live culture yogurt). The girls were doing the measurements so it was a little hit and miss. Then added the mixture back to the crock-pot.

5. Tucked the girls and the crock-pot in for the night and went to bed.

6. About 10 hours later we unwrapped the crock-pot and peaked inside.

The milk Had turned into yogurt over night!

7. Drain excess liquid. I have to work on this a little. The more liquid you remove the firmer the yogurt will be.
8. Remove a cup of yogurt and store in fridge for use as a starter next time.

You could stop at this point and have homemade yogurt. The girls and I decided to add Gelatin for flavor and hopefully a little thicker texture.

9. Add one large package of Jello. We used Cherry!

10. Stir and place in fridge to set.
The best part of the whole thing was when my girls ate it. They said it was the best yogurt ever!!

This is going to save us a lot of money as well as probably be much healthier.

The cost break down:
8 cups of Milk 1.76
Activa 1.59 (will not need next time)
Jello .17 (thanks to the deal at Walgreens this week)
A half gallon of yogurt total cost
3.52
This is at least half the cost it would be in the grocery store. Now that I have a starter it will cost less than 2 dollars next week!!

Walgreens Saving's

Total Spent after RR 3.00!!
Walgreen's has coupon in their weekly ad for .59 Jello. There was a printable coupon last week at Coupons.com. I do not see it today but that might be because I have printed the maximum number. For 1.25/3 participating Kraft items. Making Jello .17 a box. I was planning on  using this deal for Jello pudding however the Walgreens coupon will only work on gelatin.
Folger's Black Silk and regular coffee is on sale this week 3.49 for 10.3oz canister. I used the dollar off coupon from yesterday's paper to bring the total to 2.49.
The Blistex Revive and Restore is on sale for 1.99 and a 2 dollar Register Reward prints out. Making this item FREE. I actually made a .01. It looks like a great item for Santa to fill stockings with this year!!

Grocery Deals

Today I did my weekly grocery shopping trip. I looked over the sales and tried to match my Coupons to them.
I Started at Logli's. Logli will double coupons up to 55 cents. So my strategy is to use coupons 55 cents or less and match them to sales. Here is what I ended up with...
6-30.5oz cans of Brooks Beans. I had .55 of 2 and they were on sale for 1.00 making each can .40
2- Zataran's on sale for a dollar and I had .50 cents off 1. Final cost FREE
2- Idaho Instant potatoes. On sale 2 for 4.00. I had .55 cents off 1. So they were .90 each
The total for everything pictured above an even 6.00.
I Saved 20.37!
Next I ran to Valli Produce. I love this store for meat, and produce!! They had apples for .49lb, Roma Tomatoes for .39lb, several deli sliced cheese's & meat's for 2.99lb. My favorite deal today, A dozen large eggs for .79 cents. I did not use any coupons here but with the prices you didn't need to.
Then on to Woodman's to Finish my list. They had special Mayo marked down to .99 and I had a dollar off 2. I had a dollar off Gold and Plump Chicken, they had 4lb packages of leg quarters for 2.99 making them 1.99. The best deal by far was an "in store" coupon. 5 dollars off with the purchase of 10 select General Mills Items. They were about 10 items that you could choose from. I decided to get 10 Betty Crocker Muffin Mixes. They sell for .89. I bought 10 and received 5 dollar credit. Making them .39 each and I get box tops to donate to my local school group.
So the grand total for my weeks grocery's (stock ups included) and household supplies 75.00. What deals are you finding and at what price point do you stock up?
